anime with battleships

Anime With Battleships - It's impossible to overstate how impressive the space battleship Yamato is. Setting the bar and paving the way for future Sci-Fi anime, Yoshinobu Nishizaki and Leiji Matsumoto's 1974 series coughed up nearly every mixer in how the medium is viewed and functions today - since its American dubbed adaptation, Starblazers has been instrumental in bringing anime to a worldwide audience that its fan base was such an integral part of in the early days of cosplay. Some have even cited him as a huge influence on the original Star Wars. But while its influence has never waned, the combination of dispersion and a constant cycle of new shows means its legacy isn't always recognized as much as it should be. However, between 2012 and 2013, the historical series made a huge comeback in the guise of a new remake, Space Battleship Yamato 2199. Originally released as seven feature films, it was turned into a 26-episode series - finally released in the West more once with Starblazers -its name (only this time without significant changes in voice acting).

In the year 2199, humanity is on the brink of extinction after coming into contact with an alien race known as the Gamilas. After an interstellar war that has lasted nearly eight years, the Gamilas have bombed Earth in an attempt to destroy life on the planet and wipe out its inhabitants. Humanity's last hope comes from the planet Iscandar, which sent an emissary to Earth after learning of its plight. Iscandar promises a Cosmo Reverse System that can undo the damage done by the Gamilas, leaving humanity with interstellar flight plans so they can come and receive it.

With only 365 days to go, the crew of Yamato travels to the far reaches of the universe with one mission - to collect Iscandar's Cosmo Reverse System and return home. But along the way, they face the wrath of the Gamilas and their despotic ruler Abelt Dessler, as well as many other complications that could jeopardize Yamato's mission.

Adapting that nearly 40-year-old property is never an easy task, especially when the goal must be to present a worthy update to the original that fixes any kind of date without losing what made it so special in the first place. The original space battleship Yamato may be legendary, but for modern audiences it has its problems. A female staff member whose sexual harassment is the main source of comedy is perhaps the most notable, but so is the simplicity with which the show presented its villains and unexplained continuity issues (like Gamilas' skin turning blue after a few episodes to make them aliens). These are all questions that Yamato 2199 tackles from the start, significantly expanding the female cast through new characters and gender swaps (pilot Akira Yamamoto was male in the original). These strange continuity traits become a huge part of Yamato's lore, as the Gamilas now assimilate other races into their ranks and look down on them as second-class citizens. The original set model shouldn't be overlooked, but immediately these changes make the Yamato 2199 a richer experience, more open to dissection and palatable to modern audiences. Both the new and the old blend together seamlessly, and even for a newcomer it's clear how much influence Yamato has had.

Yamato 2199 follows the template of the original for the most part as a series where the crew encounters a new problem during their long journey to Iscandar. While there are naturally continuous plot elements that occur throughout the show, most episodes can be seen as their own stories that capture another element of the overall package - be it a glorious space battle, a rich sci-fi plot, or a deeper study. of the character. . Some episodes are action-packed, while others are much slower paced and more personal. As a space opera, it's as much character drama as it is sci-fi epic, and the story format, along with its military-heavy aesthetic (Yamato itself is based on a real warship, after all) has an unmistakably classic feel.

Part of what makes the Yamato 2199 work so well is the desire to make it feel like a cooperative piece. While there should be no doubt that strategist Susumu Kodai is the protagonist of the story and that his growing relationship with crew member Yuki Mori is central to this, all of the main characters are given a chance to grow into their own individuality. plot too. Even Analyzer, the ship's helpful robot, gets an Asimov-inspired episode as he befriends a reprogrammed Gamilan android, and the concept of artificial intelligence is explored. The much-needed gender balance makes the crew that much more believable, as everyone now has a purpose aboard the Yamato and no one is a complete hero. While there's no denying that Yamato has maintained some element of fan service with their tight-fitting uniforms, no female cast is defined by this. They all have their own stories and agencies, and if anything a character becomes more memorable because of it. The backstories intertwine and develop in interesting ways, and the story gives way to some unexpected twists that reveal friction within the team itself.

The same care has also been taken to make the series' villains as interesting as possible. The aforementioned addition of classism and racial integration adds a lot of depth to Gamilas society, although the surface is barely scratched, leaving plenty of room for more backstory, as well as leaving the audience wanting more. While Nazi imagery is particularly heavy-handed when it comes to high-ranking members of its forces, in many cases the show is also keen to present them as more than just obstacles for Yamato to overcome - involving its characters with family ties or restrictions. Sense of honor Even Dessler, a character repeatedly portrayed as highly reprehensible, oozes charisma and a hint that he wasn't always the monster we see on screen. Between that and the political conflict that develops later in the series, the Gamilas establish themselves as decent characters in their own right, further enhancing the space opera aspect of the series.

Given that the series was originally made with a theatrical presentation in mind, it shouldn't come as a surprise to hear that Yamato 2199 looks absolutely beautiful. Agree or not, dated animation is often the biggest hurdle when it comes to newer anime fans watching older shows, so Yamato getting this kind of lavish production is the best thing that could have happened to him. The overall presentation remains crisp and consistent despite mid-way animation changes, with AIC drawing the first ten episodes (pictures one through three) and Xebec continuing through the remaining sixteen (pictures four through seven). Despite the black space and navy gray of the Yamato itself, the Yamato 2199 is an exceptionally vibrant production, with impressive attention to color and detail. Excessive use of CGI in a 2D production can sometimes be detrimental, but Yamato's spectacular battle sequences are far ahead of the productions that have taken over since then. The character designs have been updated, but only to the extent that they match the sleeker aesthetic - Leiji Matsumoto's obvious style is still intact.

There are many aspects of Yamato 2199 that contribute to its old school feel, but arguably the biggest one is the soundtrack. From its second opening theme, the original series still sung by Isao Sasaki, the mood is instantly captured. The score is also heavily influenced by the original, well composed by Akira Miyagawa - son of Hiroshi, the composer of the original Yamato. Each episode features a complete soundtrack that is almost cinematic in its own right, which for viewers experiencing it as a 26-episode series gives a glimpse of the kind of greatness that Yamato 2199 must have had when watching it on the silver screen.

Space Battleship Yamato 2199 is a near-perfect exercise in how to do a modern adaptation of a classic series just right. The magnificent space opera backdrop spawned by a thousand imitators remains intact, and with the improvements brought by deeper storytelling and modern animation improvements, it has never looked or felt better. While it can be hard to measure the legacy left by the original series, Yamato 2199 tried it with all guns blazing and the end result is truly a sight to behold. As something that will impress Yamato fans and newcomers alike, this is truly essential anime viewing. Welcome to the /Protagonist wiki! If you can help us with this wiki, please sign up and help us!
