460 Caliber Pistol - The Smith & Wesson Model 460 is a five-shot, single-action/double-action revolver chambered by Smith & Wesson for the .460 S&W Magnum cartridge. It was designed as a hunting and game defense revolver for use in Africa and Alaska. The revolver is based on the company's largest and strongest frame, known as the X-Frame, and represents a joint effort by Smith & Wesson, Hornady and Cor-Bon.
The basic design of the Model 460 is based on another X-frame revolver, its counterpart the Smith & Wesson Model 500, a 50-caliber revolver.

According to Smith & Wesson, the Model 460 XVR (XVR stands for X-treme Velocity Revolver) is the highest velocity production revolver, but also the most powerful .45 caliber revolver in the world, firing a 200 grain (13 gram) bullet. at a velocity of 2,330 feet per second (710 meters per second), a muzzle blast of 2,416 foot-force (3,276 joules).

This revolver uses a boost rifling that starts at 1 twist per 100" and gradually increases to 1 twist per 20" to accommodate the combination of high pressure and velocity typical of a heavy ball cartridge.
The S&W Model 460 received the Outstanding Handgun of the Year award from the Shooting Industry Academy upon its debut in 2005.
Smith & Wesson offers several variants of this revolver. Some with short barrels, such as the Model 460 ES, are intended for use in small aircraft survival kits in the event of a crash in the Alaskan Bear Country.
