However, one complaint about Glocks is that their trigger pull is too weak to be safe, leading to accidental discharges. Is there any basis for this rumor?
A Different Kind Of Reporting Assignment: Build A Glock 19
The Glock 17 pistol went on sale in the United States in the early 1980s to near universal acclaim. The new gun, which made extensive use of polymers for lighter loads, included several new or previously unexplored features, including a blowback operating system. Although not new, the percussion firing system contrasted with the more traditional hammer firing system that was typical of many pistols on the American market.
In a percussion pistol, pulling the pistol slide back cocks the weapon halfway, a process that is completed when the trigger is pulled. Pulling the trigger releases three separate safeties, each designed to prevent accidental discharges that do not involve the trigger finger. One of the final actions activated by pulling the trigger is the release of the firing pin, which is then struck by the firing pin. This impact force finally impacts the casing, setting off a chain reaction that ends with the bullet exiting the barrel of the gun.
Glock calls this system the "Safe Action" operating system, and there is a lot of truth in that. The Glock can only be fired when the trigger is pulled, meaning that falling to the ground from holsters and other objects, for example, cannot cause the hammer to fly forward and hit a nail. Without human contact, three safeties, including the trigger safety, will prevent the gun from firing.
The main advantage of the striker-fired system is the relatively light trigger pull compared to other pistol operating systems. All full-size compact Glocks have a trigger pull of approximately twenty-four newtons, or 5.39 pounds, versus twenty-eight newtons, or 6.29 pounds of force for the smaller concealed carry Glock pistol. However, this level of force is not uncommon, as out of the box 1911A1 pistols have a trigger pull of between 4.5 and 6.1 pounds.
Weapon Of Choice' Finds Out Why The Glock Is Most Popular Handgun
Other pistols, especially double-action pistols, have a much longer trigger pull. The Beretta 92, the US Army's service pistol for decades, has an initial trigger pull of thirteen pounds as the trigger moves through various stages to strike the hammer, then a lighter five-pound pull for subsequent shots.
While many pistols have very high trigger pulls, it is clear that others have trigger pull weights very similar to Glocks, and have for decades. The Glock's "slight trigger pull" appears to be more likely due to a combination of factors including operator error and pistol design.
Under normal circumstances where a "light trigger" might prove to be a problem, the only reason to pull the trigger would be to fire the gun. New Glock owners who are used to the heavy trigger of a double-action pistol may find themselves applying more pressure to the pistol than necessary, causing the pistol to fire prematurely. However, this is a training error, not a design error.
One issue that may contribute to the controversy is Glock's lack of an external safety that prevents the trigger from being pulled. The lack of an external safety means there is no safety mechanism if the gun operator violates the third law of gun safety: Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to fire. A shooter who is a little too careless with an external safety pistol can be punished with a Glock with dire consequences. While a Glock can benefit from an external guard, the responsibility lies with the person pulling the trigger.
Do Glocks Have Safeties? [2022]
Glock pistols may have a "lighter" trigger, but historically they were no lighter than other commonly owned pistols. After all, the gun operator is the only person who can fire their gun, and it is up to the Glock owner to handle their weapon safely and learn the ins and outs of their firearm. Handcuffs may refer to freedom, but also to responsibility.
